Interdisciplinary Emphasis
The Interdisciplinary Emphasis is available to students from all majors, allowing students from any discipline to tailor their semester and classes to meet their academic requirements and interests.
Interdisciplinary Emphasis students have course flexibility which allows for a USP African Core Course (African Literature, East African Politics or Contemporary Religions in Uganda), UCU classes, and/or a language (Kiswahili or Luganda). Students completing our Interdisciplinary Emphasis have always represented a wide variety of academic disciplines, including Intercultural Studies, Missions, Education, International Relations, Business, Sociology, Anthropology, Linguistics/ World Languages, Psychology and more.
Course Requirements
All Interdisciplinary students take Faith & Action in the Ugandan Context, Cross-Cultural Seminar & Cross-Cultural Practicum, and a selection or African Context Courses or UCU electives.
Cross-Cultural Seminar (2 credits) & Cross-Cultural Practicum (2-4 credits)
The Cross-Cultural Seminar & Cross-Cultural Practicum provide the academic framework and seminar-based learning to allow undergraduate students to learn how culture and cross-cultural disparities, differences, and communication are important to their chosen vocation. These co-requisite courses focus on increasing cross-cultural competency through professional internships and integration into an Ugandan community. These courses provide guidance to students through their day-to-day life and work in Uganda, helping them translate their learning to their unique vocation in a global context.
Students are expected to complete a minimum of 80 hours at an approved internship location, to engage in their respective living context communities (either local neighborhoods or the UCU campus), and interact with guest speakers, site visits and travel in Uganda. If a student desires to make their internship experience a more significant part of their time in Uganda, there is an option to increase the hours at a site. With each 40-hour increase, another credit will be granted. Students who need their internship to meet specific requirements of their major should include this information in their application.
